Penis size and diabetes: Are they related?

Diabetic men often complain about their deteriorating sexual health. Increased blood sugar levels and plaque build-up in the arteries, which is common in diabetes, can reduce the blood flow in the penis, causing erectile dysfunction and penis shrinkage.

Diabetes, as you already know, is a metabolic disease associated with abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. If diabetes is not adequately managed, the patient can develop severe complications. While there is always an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease if you have diabetes, research indicates that men with diabetes are more likely to develop sexual problems like erectile dysfunction.

In fact, you will be surprised to know that diabetes is also strongly related with an increased risk for penis shrinkage. It has been estimated that over 85% of all diabetic men complain about shrinkage of penis or erectile dysfunction. Research has also found that diabetic men are over three times more likely than other men to experience reduction in penis size.

High levels of blood sugar that is mainly responsible for affecting penis size in diabetic men. Excess blood sugar can damage blood vessels, reducing the flow of blood in the penis. If blood circulation in the penis chamber decreases, it leads to loss of erection and overall decrease in size.

Cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis, common complications of diabetes, can damage blood vessels due to the formation of plaque. Build-up of plaque can slow down the flow of blood flow in the penis, increasing the risk of shrinkage. Poor blood sugar control in diabetic men can also reduce the production of nitric oxide, a neurotransmitter essential for erection. Lack of nitric oxide in penis chamber can prevent the pressure of blood from raising enough to cause erection.

Proper regulation and control of blood sugar levels is the best way to avoid penis shrinkage. It is also important to understand that if you experience reduction in penis size, then there are treatment options available for help. Eating healthy diet and doing regular exercise can help regulate blood sugar levels and avoid penis size reduction.
